Paul Coutts has backed Cove Rangers to continue their journey of success.
The Fleetwood Town midfielder, a Highland League title winner with Cove in 2008, expected the Aberdeen side to kick on in the SPFL after their promotion last year.
They became the first Highland League side a year ago to make the step up into League Two and have strengthened, recruiting Paul Hartley as manager to replace Coutts’s old boss John Sheran.
Should the proposals put forward by the SPFL yesterday to end the League Two season on a points per game basis come to pass, Cove will achieve back-to-back promotions with the league unlikely to finish.
Coutts said: “They’ve been superb. Hopefully for them the season can resume but, if it were to stop, I would hope they would be crowned champions for the season they’ve had.”
Meanwhile, Rangers insist the SPFL should release prize money now rather than “railroad rule changes.
A decision on the Premiership remains on hold and Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson is part of the nine-strong SPFL board who made the lower league recommendation.
But the Ibrox club say they will oppose any attempt to end the season and relegate clubs based on their current league positions.
The Rangers statement added: “Any restructure of the SPFL or other solutions to the current impasse must be afforded time to scrutinise in detail and consider all options.
“The consequences of forcing through change without due care and attention will have severe consequences for the Scottish game.”
