Kevin Thomson linked with Cove Rangers – but Championship new boys look set to go different way in boss hunt

Cove Rangers have been linked with Kevin Thomson – but it is understood the ex-Kelty Hearts boss is not the Aberdeen outfit’s preferred candidate to become their new manager.

The Balmoral Stadium club are expected to appoint a replacement for Paul Hartley by the middle of the week, having spent the last few days assessing their options and poring over the CVs of a number of applicants.

Former boss Hartley left for Hartlepool United last week, having led Cove to the League 1 title last season and after earning the club promotion to the Championship.

His decision was a move which surprised supporters of the Granite City part-timers.

Former Scotland international Thomson, 37, left Kelty – another rapidly ascending club – two months ago after leading the Fife side to the League 2 crown, with the expectation he would quickly find a job higher up the pyramid.

The ex-Rangers player missed out on manager’s gigs at two full-time clubs, Kilmarnock and Raith Rovers, in recent months. And he has now been linked to the Cove job and is said to be interested in the role.

However, ex-Highland League outfit Cove are expected to go in a different direction.

They are bidding to make an impact in their first-ever campaign in Scottish football’s majority-full-time second tier, and continue a run of success which has seen them earn two promotions in just three seasons of SPFL football.
