Connor Scully has enjoyed being Cove Rangers’ Mr Consistent this season, as they seek to establish themselves as a Championship side.
Cove are keeping themselves out of danger at the moment, sitting in eighth spot in their first season as a second-tier club.
Scully has arguably been their stand-out performer so far, with his brace in the 2-0 win over Queen’s Park on Friday night taking him up to seven league goals for the season.
The 30-year-old has been a dependable figure for Cove boss Jim McIntyre, filling in at full-back, central midfield, winger and even briefly at centre-half.
McIntyre was able to heap praise again on him at the weekend, saying that Scully is a “seven out of 10” every week and is no hassle to work with.
“I thought I was a failed winger but I’m coming back into that role again,” joked Scully.
“The gaffer knows I’ll play anywhere.
“I’ve played about five positions this season and I’m just happy to be on the park. I try and stay consistent, which I’ve done well this season, and long may it continue.
‘It’s a tough league’
“On a personal level, it’s been my most enjoyable. As a team we want to pick up more points and be higher up the table than we are, but it’ll come.
“It’s a tough league – anyone can beat anyone – and you go into each game not knowing what can happen. We’re just trying to establish ourselves.”
Scully’s brace had put him in second place in the Championship scoring charts, prior to the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.
It also helped Cove earn their first win over the Spiders in five attempts. Queen’s Park won the earlier meeting this season and were unbeaten in four contests in the last campaign against Cove, as both sides fought for promotion from League One.
“We played well against a good Queen’s Park side,” said Scully. “They created a lot but Stu was magnificent in goal. He stopped a few great opportunities.
“We want to make this place a fortress. It gives us a bit of breathing space and confidence going into Arbroath next weekend, which is a massive game.
“A clean sheet is a great thing to have coming into the next game.”
