Elgin City midfielder Thomas Reilly is refusing to concede defeat in the Black and Whites’ bid to catch League 2 leaders Forfar Athletic.
Elgin squandered a 2-1 lead against the 10-man Loons in Monday’s crucial fixture at Borough Briggs, with the 2-2 draw meaning Jim Weir’s men remain 11 points off the pace.
Although Forfar have lost only three games this term, compared to Elgin’s eight, Reilly knows much can change.
Elgin make the trip to seventh-placed Montrose today and Reilly said: “It’s definitely not over yet.
“We were top at this point last year but then went on a bad spell of six games without a win so we know that can happen.
“We are not going to give up on trying to win it. We have still got to play Forfar twice, while teams around us like Arbroath can take points off anyone.
“It’s a good league where everyone takes points off each other.
“We just have to worry about ourselves and make sure we stay in the play-off positions and hope Forfar drop points.”
Reilly was sent off in his most recent outing – a 3-2 defeat by Arbroath at Gayfield on December 17 – and was banned for Monday’s draw with the League 2 leaders.
The 22-year-old has been left frustrated by his enforced three-week break and is itching to return for today’s game against the Gable Endies.
He said: “It’s three weeks since I last played and it seems like a long time. I’m looking forward to the game.
“Because of the way it ended against Arbroath I probably haven’t enjoyed the break.
“It was a case of wanting the next game to come as soon as possible.
“The team already didn’t have a game for two weeks, while the suspension meant I missed probably the biggest game of the season – which was the most frustrating thing about it all.
“That’s what happens in football. It was good to get a little break but to miss such a big game was not exactly ideal.
“Hopefully, we will put in a performance similar to our previous visit to Montrose last October when we won 5-0. If we play our own game we should have too much for them.”
