Elgin City defender David Wilson feels he is already reaping the benefits of a stronger Black and Whites squad this season.

Teenager Wilson made the breakthrough into Gavin Price’s side last term, making 26 appearances after being handed his debut in a 2-0 Betfred Cup loss to Arbroath last July.

Having started all four of Elgin’s League Cup group matches so far this term at right-back, Wilson feels the increased competition throughout the team has raised his own standards.

The 19-year-old said: “I was pleased with how last season went. I got more appearances than I thought I was going to at the start of the season.

“Looking ahead to this season, I have put in a lot of hard work over the summer. I feel I am definitely a better player than I was last season.

“I’ve got a bit more experience and I’m used to playing in League 2.

“I think the squad in general is definitely a lot better and more competitive than last year.

“Although I think I have improved, I think the squad has as well. There is loads of competition for places, which drives you on.”

Price has made six summer additions in total, bringing in Andy McDonald, Euan Spark, Russell Dingwall, Rory MacEwan, Conor O’Keefe and Shane Sutherland.

Wilson is already encouraged by the impact of the new arrivals, saying: “The boys who have come in have settled really well.

“We had plenty pre-season friendlies and the whole squad was involved in three or four of them.

“That has definitely helped us click a wee bit earlier.

“With Shane Sutherland back and alongside Kane Hester at the top end of the pitch, we believe we can score goals.

“I think we were missing a bit of pace last year and Conor O’Keefe down the left is lightning quick.

“Hopefully we can kick on for the first few games.”

City’s League 2 campaign begins at home against Cowdenbeath tomorrow and Wilson feels optimistic after taking five points from a group section which included Championship sides Alloa Athletic and Arbroath as well as top-flight Hibernian.
