Elgin City stunned Championship side Dundee to come from behind and win 2-1 in their Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup tie.
Gavin Price’s side gave up two divisions on their full-time opponents and were behind at the break after Cammy Kerr’s first-half goal.
However, in three bizarre second-half minutes, the game turned on its head with Rabin Omar’s spectacular equaliser, a red card for Dundee goalkeeper Calum Ferrie and Shane Sutherland’s decisive goal.
It puts Elgin in the fourth round of the competition and sees Dundee follow their city rivals United out of the competition.
Elgin made one change fro the 3-3 draw with Edinburgh City, as Matthew Cooper came into midfield for Rory MacEwan.
The home side have a two-division advantage on Elgin and picked a strong side, with Kane Hemmings picked to lead the line and drawing the first save of the game out of Tom McHale.
But by the 18th minute they were in front. Kerr cut inside Rabin Omar too easily and launched a speculative shot from 25 yards, which beat McHale despite the goalkeeper’s acrobatic attempt to keep it out.
Elgin did not fold, however, and enjoyed decent spells on the ball. Shane Sutherland and Kane Hester combined in the build-up to the latter’s cross, which Cooper met at the back post. The makeshift midfielder could not direct the header down but it still required a save from Calum Ferrie.
Dundee brought on Andrew Nelson at half-time to partner Hemmings in attack and the ex-Falkirk striker had McHale scrambling with a long-range effort that whistled past the far post.
Josh Meekings was next to try his luck with a header from Sean Mackie’s corner but Elgin were not going away, with Kane Hester slashing a shot across goal after Brian Cameron’s initial attempt was blocked.
Omar made the most of the ball breaking to him just inside the box, fizzing a first-time shot into top corner to level the scores 11 minutes into the second half.
Elgin’s day got even better within the space of two minutes. Mackie’s attempted clearance was wayward, allowing Hester to nip in on goal. Ferrie came out of his box and wiped out the striker but referee Grant Irvine waved play on, allowing Sutherland to slot into an empty net..
Meekings and Nelson had half-chances that McHale gratefully clung on to, as the 10 men continued to huff and puff without finding a way through.
The resolve of the visitors held firm to secure a famous result, as the patience of the home fans and the clock ran out on Dundee.
