Elgin City manager Gavin Price hopes his side’s early season flair will be attractive to supporters should the Black and Whites get the green light to host crowds from next week.
Moray is in tier one of the Scottish government’s new coronavirus restrictions which come into effect from Monday, which will allow the partial reopening of stadiums to a restricted number of supporters.
Although Scottish football’s joint response group is still in talks with the Scottish government to ratify the return of fans, Elgin are making primitive plans to host a restricted crowd at their next Borough Briggs fixture against Queen’s Park next Saturday.
Elgin have started the new campaign in excellent form, scoring 11 goals to help them rack up four straight victories.
Having ended last term with seven victories from their final nine games before the season was curtailed due to Covid-19, Price is hopeful his side’s form will spark plenty interest from fans.
Price said: “Fingers crossed, you wouldn’t want to second guess anything at the moment when you see what’s happening in France.
“We will just wait and see what happens, but it would be a great bonus if we could get fans in.
“It’s what we are playing for at the end of the day. The streaming has allowed fans to keep in touch with what’s been going on, it has been a real lifeline for them.
“There is nothing better than having supporters in the ground though, and particularly if we are doing well. It can only be seen as an advantage for us.
“Over the last nine months a real attacking brand of football has been getting played. We are scoring a lot of goals, and long may that continue.
“It would be good to share that with supporters. They have been quite happy with what they have been seeing on the streaming service just now, but there is nothing like being there in the flesh.”
Elgin make the trip to Edinburgh City in League Two tomorrow, as they look to build on their strong start to the campaign.
Although Elgin’s attacking threat has been underlined by seven goals in their opening two league games, Price is pleased with all aspects of his side.
Price said: “We are playing well, but we are not getting carried away. It’s early days in the season but we’ve got a settled team which did well at the end of last season, and we have continued that form.
“Importantly in our opening four games we have only conceded one goal from a set play at Stranraer which was avoidable.
“The back four and goalkeeper are working really well as a unit just now, which is as pleasing as the chances we are creating.
“We have guys like Russell Dingwall and Brian Cameron contributing from the middle of the park. It’s good we are getting goals from different areas.
“Every time we make substitutions we look as if we can freshen it up. Aiden Sopel and Josh Peters have come on and do well.”
Although Kane Hester has been Elgin’s main marksman with four goals already this season, Price feels his fellow attackers have made big contributions.
He added: “Smart Osadolor has played in a variety of positions including out wide and has had three assists in the last two games, while Conor O’Keefe was fantastic on Saturday, he was really dangerous and created a lot of opportunities.
“Smart missed a really good chance on Saturday which he was kicking himself for but that’s part and parcel. It’s a real team effort.”
