Elgin City manager Gavin Price got the reaction he wanted as his players bounced back to winning ways with an excellent 3-1 win at Annan Athletic.
Price was unhappy with his players’ performance in their previous outing as they were beaten 4-0 at home by Dumbarton but was much happier following his side’s win at Galabank.
The City boss said: “I was critical of the players last week but they put a lot of effort into training through the week and it paid dividends with this result.
“The players worked very hard and were up against it in the second half but they defended well when need be.
“Annan put us under a lot of pressure. They are a big physical side and they bombarded our penalty box at times but the players put their bodies on the line.
“It was a great effort.”
Cameron double helps City to victory
City opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Angus Mailer struck the opener from close range.
Brian Cameron lobbed Annan goalkeeper Greg Fleming with a spectacular 20-yard effort to double the Black and Whites’ lead three minutes before half-time.
Annan created chances after the break as they looked to get back into the game and Cameron headed off the line for his side before Tam Muir was denied by City goalkeeper Thomas McHale.
The home side did pull a goal back 16 minutes from time through Reece Lyons’ well-taken 20 yard free kick, however, and laid siege to the City goal in pursuit of an equaliser.
But with the home side having committed men forward Cameron struck again from 15 yards two minutes from time to secure all three points for Elgin.
Price said: “It was great to see Brian on the scoresheet again. I’ve been urging him to be more positive in the final third as he is a natural goalscorer.
“His first goal was an excellent strike and his second to make sure we won the game was a clinical finish after some great unselfish work in the build-up from Russell Dingwall.”
City up to third but Price not looking at league table
Saturday’s win takes City up to third place in League Two and on course for a play-off spot but the Elgin manager is refusing to get carried away.
He said: “I’m not worried about our league position at this stage.
“I’m more interested in making sure we’re back on song again and about to find that consistency in our performances and results.
“We need to get on a wee run again and it’s only near the end of the season that the league table will become significant for us.”
