Elgin boss challenges players ahead of Berwick clash

Elgin City manager Jim Weir has challenged his players to take the club to its highest league position of the season by defeating Berwick Rangers at Borough Briggs tonight.

The Black and Whites recorded its most impressive win of the campaign on Saturday by wining 3-0 at league leaders Albion Rovers and Weir is eager to build on the result when Berwick make the trip north tonight.

He said: “We’ve had a number of good performances this season, but to beat the league leaders by a three-goal margin and keep a clean sheet in the process is certainly up there.

“Our back four defended really well and I’m delighted with what they are giving me. To go to Albion Rovers, who were on a five-game winning run, and end the run in the manner we did shows the confidence levels of the team at the moment.

“The Berwick game is a very important one for us. We want to maintain our advantage on Berwick and we know if we take something from the game we will jump a place to fifth, which would be the highest we have been since I came to the club.”

Victory for City would take them above East Stirlingshire and within a point of fourth-placed East Fife, who hold the final play-off berth.

City’s promotion prospects looked a distant dream when Weir arrived in December, with the club adrift at the bottom of League 2.

But a remarkable rise up the table could have a fairytale ending and Weir wants his players to reward the support for sticking by them.

He said: “It would be great for the players and the supporters too and it is important whatever happens that we try to finish the season as high as possible in the league.

“The games are counting down now and hopefully we can give the supporters an exciting end to the campaign.”

Elgin captain Jamie Duff suffered a knock in Saturday’s win at Albion Rovers but Weir hopes he will recover in time for tonight’s game.

Midfielders Ceiran McLean will miss the rest of the season after suffering a fractured cheekbone and Rory MacEwan is also missing due a knee injury.
