Elgin City’s players have been asked to go out and create history at Hampden Park by knocking out Queen’s Park and reaching the semi-finals of the Petrofac Training Cup for the first time.
The Moray men have only ever reached the quarter-finals once before in their 15 years as a senior side but their dreams of cup success ended with a 4-2 defeat at Annan in September 2009.
Assistant manager Gavin Price reckons that this season’s squad can go one better as he explained: “This is a big game in our season and a big occasion for our players but one that we can enjoy.
“There is not much between the sides and the tie is in the balance, so we are in a good position.”
Elgin lost 3-1 to the Spiders in Glasgow last month but Price believes that not too much can be read into that game.
He said: “That was a strange game as it looked like there was a foul in the build up to their first goal. We then had a man sent off and went two down but got back into the game when they had a player dismissed.
“We had all the momentum before we lost a goal reminiscent of Peter Encklemen’s mistake for Aston Villa all those years ago.”
Price added: “We had been poor on the road in the league this season until we played Annan a couple of weeks ago. We changed our shape that day and deserved a draw, so I do not think we will change much from the set-up from that game.”
Elgin have no injury worries and hope to re-sign goalkeeper Mark Hurst on loan from St Johnstone in time for kick-off. Recent trialist Jordan Allan cannot feature as no permanent contract has been agreed.
