Craig Gunn was part of the Ross County side that lifted the Challenge Cup nine years ago and now the attacker is hoping to move a step closer to reaching another final with Elgin City.
The Black and Whites make the trip to face fellow League 2 outfit Queen’s Park for this afternoon’s Petrofac Training Cup quarter-final at Hampden Park.
Gunn tasted success in the competition in 2006, helping then First Division County defeat Clyde on penalties after a 1-1 draw at McDiarmid Park.
Gunn admits repeating the feat with his current club would be difficult given their League 2 status but the attacker reckons the draw gives his Elgin a fine chance of making it to the last four.
Gunn said: “I won the competition a few years ago, near the start of my career under Scott Leitch. It was a really good day for everyone involved.
“Hopefully, I can take my experience of that into this game. It’s a big game for the players and as a club.
“Queen’s Park are in the same division, so it’s a chance for us to get into a semi-final. It would be a big achievement to get Elgin into a semi-final.
“Rangers and Peterhead are still in the competition, so there is the chance of a big game in the next round if we get through.”
Elgin are just one point behind today’s opponents in League 2, with the Spiders sitting third.
Gus MacPherson’s men triumphed 3-1 when the sides met on league duty last month and Gunn is determined to avenge for the result.
The 28-year-old added: “It’s going to be a tough game. They have always been a good passing side, so we need to go there and put in a good performance.
“A few decisions maybe went against us the last time we played them but we’ll take confidence from having played them before.
“We’ve now played everyone in our league this season, so hopefully we can get some revenge on them.”
