Morecambe Town boss Derek Adams believes it would be unfair to enforce promotion and relegation if the football season can’t be finished.
Football across the United Kingdom is suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus crisis, with the English Football League postponed until at least April 30.
But it looks increasingly unlikely that there will be a return to action before August, leaving administrators with a logistical headache while clubs count the cost of a lengthy period with no matchday income.
In a joint statement released on Friday, the English Premier League and the English Football League admitted they faced “difficult decisions” in the weeks ahead as they try to safeguard clubs against financial ruin.
Morecambe sit 23rd in the 24-team League Two, with the team finishing bottom of the table relegated to the National League.
The Shrimps sit 10 points above basement side Stevenage but Adams thinks it would be very harsh on the Boro if they were to be demoted with nine games still remaining.
Adams said: “I think there are only two possibilities now.
“I find it difficult to see how the season can finish before June 30. That is going to be extremely difficult.
“If we continue past that date, how is it going to impact the players who are out of contract after June 30?
“Are they going to sign short-term deals? What is going to happen? No one has an answer for that yet.
“We are getting to a stage where the players are going to be off for a long period of time.
“They will have to come back and train to get fit again to finish the final nine games of the season.
“There is a whole host of things that haven’t been spoken about but need to be ratified before they start the season again.
“If the season is to be declared null and void, as has happened in the lower reaches of English football, then I think that is the fairest way.
“To halt the season and have teams relegated and promoted on the basis of where they are now doesn’t seem fair.
“There are so many points to play for.
“The only two possibilities are finishing the season when we can resume play or the season being declared null and void.”
