Danny Welbeck was the talk of the tweets last night

Last night the attention of the footballing world turned to the Champions League, with Liverpool and Arsenal recording very different results but come win, lose or draw you can always be sure that Twitter will always be full of reaction from current and former players alike.

Arsenal secured a 4-1 victory thanks to a hat trick from £16 million summer signing Danny Welbeck, meanwhile Liverpool fell to a disappointing 1-0 loss against Basle, with their own £16 million summer signing, Mario Balotelli, failing to register a single touch in the opposition’s box.

After the match supporters were joined on Twitter by current and former players in praising Welbeck.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere was delighted for his Arsenal and England team mate.

Meanwhile one former English goal grabber was impressed with the goals of England’s current form striker.

As well as Welbeck’s first senior hat trick, last night also marked 18 years in the Arsenal hotseat for Arsene Wenger and midfielder Mesut Ozil was pleased to help earn three anniversary points for him.

But while all Arsenal tweets were cheery and upbeat, it was a different story for Liverpool. Former Reds striker John Aldridge took to Twitter to express his frustration.

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann also had his say and called for the Anfield faithful to back the team.

But the one bright side for Liverpool has got to be the fact they were at least playing in the Champions League – Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie was only able to tweet this picture of him and his team mates training this afternoon…
