A hugely frustrating match for Cove who dropped two points at the Broch, but were convinced they should have had a winner.
With the Granite City club’s title rivals Buckie Thistle and Formartine United also dropping points, Cove missed out on the opportunity to close the gap on new league leaders Brora Rangers.
Ryan Cowie’s brilliant 83rd-minute 25-yard free kick earned the Broch a deserved point, but Cove players and officials claimed Blair Yule’s drive, only minutes before Fraserburgh levelled, had crossed the line.
Yule had his doubts and said: “I’m really not sure, we had a couple of other chances which also hit the post, it just wasn’t our day but we played really well, probably the best we’ve played up here.
“It’s a tough place to come and we just couldn’t get over the line.
“The Broch players are determined, earlier in the season we were 2-0 up against them and they came back to make it 2-2, they’re always at the opposition.”
Broch midfielder Willie West reckoned a draw was about right, and said: “It’s always a point gained against the champions.
“Cove are a good side and were probably big favourites going into this game.
“It would have been good to get a win but we would have accepted a point before the game for sure.”
Long-serving Fraserburgh centre half Ryan Christie was recalled from his short loan spell at Fraserburgh United to captain the side and make his first appearance of the season.
Cove were looking for their first win in six against the Broch but within three minutes the champions were caught cold when the home side took the lead.
Cove central defender Darryl Kelly could not deal with a long clearance from captain Christie and Gary Harris picked up possession and ran on to thread the ball low past goalkeeper Stuart McKenzie from 14 yards.
The champions were quickly back on level terms when Connor Scully gave Paul Leask no chance with a ferocious 15-yard shot into the top left corner of the net.
The game was being played at a furious pace but referee Davie Watt was letting play flow.
In the 27th minute Christie again played in Harris, but this time the former Turriff United attacker’s low shot came back off the foot of the post and the home side were to regret the miss when Cove took the lead in the 36th minute in controversial circumstances.
Leask appeared to be have been impeded by Cove captain Eric Watson in clearing from hand but referee Watt waved play on.
The goalkeeper’s poor clearance was returned swiftly into the box and Mitch Megginson showed great composure to score from six yards.
Aidan Combe almost levelled for the Broch but his effort back across goal drifted just wide of the post and at the other end Yule was unlucky when his angled drive came back off the inside of one post, hit the other upright and rebounded into the grounded Leask’s hands.
Cove players were adamant the ball had crossed the line, but referee Watt waved away their protests.
With seven minutes left Fraserburgh equalised when Cowie’s 25-yard free kick beat the goalkeeper and flew into the postage stamp corner to thrill the home supporters.
Still Cove pressed for the winner and in added time Jonny Smith hit the post with a superb 22-yard free kick, the last action in a pulsating match.
