Cove Rangers midfielder Blair Yule knows victory against Buckie Thistle on Saturday could prove pivotal in the chase for the Highland League championship.

Brora are back at the top of the league following the 2-1 home win against Turriff United on Saturday, while Cove drew 2-2 at Fraserburgh and Buckie went down to a surprise 3-2 loss at Forres Mechanics.

Third-placed Cove now travel to second-placed Buckie and 24-year-old Yule said: “If we win at Buckie on Saturday it would be massive, although I know nothing will be decided, win, lose or draw.

“There is a long way to go, but I’m sure both sets of players and supporters will be ready for the match.

“Brora were never out of the race for the title but after Saturday’s results they’re now back on top of the table and right back in the mix, so we will definitely be going all out to take all three points home from Victoria Park.

“Although Formartine United could only draw 1-1 at Fort William last weekend they’re still in the running as well, especially if they can string a run of wins together.”

Cove assistant manager Graeme Mathieson, meanwhile, is adamant his side should have had a third goal against Fraserburgh on Saturday when Yule’s effort was ruled not to have crossed the line.

Mathieson said: “I saw the photos taken by Richard Forbes showing the ball was well over the line.

“The players were all talking about it at training. It wasn’t close.”
