Wick Academy and Formartine United ended their campaigns by playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Harmsworth Park.
The game marked the end of an era for Wick as popular forward Gary Weir called time on his career after 442 appearances for the club, and he marked the occasion with a goal from the penalty spot, his 168th in all competitions.
United took an early lead the lead when Scott Ferries’ shot from 20 yards took a huge deflection off Danny Mackay and spun past the helpless Sean McCarthy.
But Weir levelled after 34 minutes, he was taken down in the area by Derek Young before dusting himself down and sending Andy Reid the wrong way from the penalty spot. Formartine regained the lead less than five minutes later when a Ferries cross from the right wing was knocked in at the front post by Liam Burnett.
Academy once again came back strong and equalised on the stroke of half-time when a poor kick from Reid went straight to the feet of Richard Macadie who played in Sam Mackay who rounded the goalkeeper before scoring from a tight angle.
Weir had a chance to win it for Wick near the end of the game when he rounded Reid but he was crudely taken down by the goalkeeper, who was lucky to escape with only a yellow card, and the chance was gone.
Academy manager Gordon Connelly said: “This performance has given me a bit of lift because it’s been a very hard and frustrating last couple of months.
“There is a lot of hard work to be done in the summer and we need to strengthen and strengthen fast.
“The 2-0 North Cup defeat at Rothes on Wednesday was hard to take but this was a lot more pleasing today.”
Formartine manager Kris Hunter said: “We had a few injuries so I thought the performance was good. I was disappointed to give away the goals in the manner we did.”
