Versatile Broch veteran Willie West ready to adapt wherever he’s needed

Fraserburgh’s Willie West admits he is happy to play in any position to aid the Broch cause.

The 30-year-old will line up against Buckie Thistle at Bellslea this afternoon, although he has no idea where on the park he will be playing.

West, who normally plays in midfield or attack, played in the centre of defence in last weekend’s 2-1 victory at Rothes alongside fellow striker Graham Johnston in a makeshift Broch defence.

West said: “We were a little bit fortunate to come away with a really big three points in a tough game at Rothes last weekend as we had quite a few players out.

“We went in with a game-plan at Mackessack Park and it worked out well on the day.

“With centre halves Ryan Christie and Bryan Hay both absentees against the Speysiders and midfielder Jamie Beagrie unavailable, we didn’t have much left, so Graham, myself and young Kieran Simpson, who had an excellent game, came in and filled in at the back.”

West added: “I’ve no idea where I might be playing against Buckie.

“I’m just happy to fill a space – wherever that may be.

“If that is in attack, midfield or defence, I don’t mind.

“We will have one of our central defenders, Bryan Hay, who was unavailable last Saturday, back for the home game against Buckie but Gary Harris picked up an injury at Rothes so he won’t make it, while Scott Barbour is also out.”

Buckie manager Graeme Stewart is preparing his side for a testing afternoon at Bellslea.

He said: “The forecast is for strong winds and heavy rain, the conditions I liked best during my playing days.

“Our last game against Clach was a real battle but I have been telling the guys in training all week that we will face an even bigger one at Bellslea this weekend.

“I would expect this to be one of our hardest games of the season, especially in the conditions, which will be testing at best.

“Unfortunately, Jay Cheyne is out as he had an operation on his ankle last Monday. He will be out of action for between eight to 12 weeks.

“Ceiran McLean is out with a cruciate ligament injury but Shaun Wood is back in the squad and out new signing Aaron McKenna looked really good in training.

“Other than that we expect our team to be along similar lines to last week.”
