Cove co-manager Graeme Mathieson so glad John Sheran could be at their crucial playoff game after suffering a heart attack last month

Cove Rangers manager John Sheran (R) takes in the game from the stands.

Cove Rangers co-manager Graeme Mathieson was delighted John Sheran was able to attend Saturday’s 4-0 SPFL pyramid play-off first leg victory against Berwick Rangers.

The Highland League champions have a massive advantage going in to this weekend’s second leg at Shielfield Park thanks to goals from Sam Burnett, Mitch Megginson, Jordon Brown and Jamie Masson.

Sheran, who suffered a heart attack last month, was not well enough to attend his side’s matches against Lowland League champions East Kilbride in the pyramid semi-final but was in the stand at Balmoral Stadium to watch his side dominate their SPFL opponents.

Mathieson said: “John came down to see us all in the dressing room after the game. It was fantastic to see him at the game.”

Mathieson said his side will take nothing for granted, despite a commanding lead ahead of Saturday’s second leg at Shielfield Park.

He said: “It is only half-time. We have to face them on their home ground, when they will be looking for an early goal.

“I felt we played really well on Saturday. We scored four but we also hit the bar a couple of times and missed two or three other chances. I told the players it is just half-time.

“We saw Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both overturning three-goal deficits, which shows what can sometimes happen in this game.

“We will just prepare as we have done and go down there and do a proper job, just as we worked hard to do on Saturday.”

Cove’s top scorer Megginson, who took his tally to 49 for the season, could be a doubt for the second leg.

Mathieson said: “We took Mitch off the minute we saw him pull up with a slight twinge in his groin area.

“Hopefully with a bit of rest and some yoga on Monday night, he’ll be OK.

“Young Sam Burnett came off at half-time after picking up a shin knock. He has been carrying a knock there these last couple of weeks.

“We will have to try to take the sting out of the game on Saturday and be careful. We certainly don’t want to concede an early goal.”
