Clachnacuddin and Fort William will honour their late former defender Simon Shields in their historic Highland League encounter at Canal Park in Inverness on Friday.
Inverness-born Shields began his career with Fort and spent two-and-a-half years at there before the defender, who was from the Merkinch area of the Highland capital, joined Clach in 2010.
Following a battle with cancer shortly after joining the Lilywhites, Shields died in 2011. He was just 23.
Clach and Fort have continued to honour their former player by holding the Simon Shields Memorial Cup, which has taken place every time the sides have met at Grant Street Park.
This weekend’s match will take on added significance however, having been switched to the artificial pitch at Highland Rugby Club following a fire on Christmas Eve which continues to leave Clach’s home ground out of use.
Calum MacLean, who last week returned for a third spell in charge of Fort, managed Shields during his first stint in charge of the Lochaber club.
MacLean said: “It’s just so sad. He was a lovely guy who gave everything for Fort William.
“He played so well that Clach came in and took him off us, although he was always a Clach boy anyway, being from Merkinch.
“The memorial has carried on for a few years and long may it continue. He was a great servant to both clubs.”
MacLean is hopeful of a strong crowd for this weekend’s game, adding: “I don’t know what to expect. I’m sure all the boys have trained and played on artificial surfaces before.
“Friday night is quite a good night for football and it allows people to do what they want on Saturday.”
