Paul Campbell’s brace capped a silverware double for Fraserburgh as they beat Inverurie Locos 3-1 in the Aberdeenshire Shield final.

Campbell’s well-taken goal put Fraserburgh into a first-half lead, however Chris Angus ensured the two sides would go in level with a delightful lofted finish.

Scott Barbour – Campbell’s strike partner – put the Bellslea outfit back in front, before Campbell was in the right place at the right time again to put the tie out of reach.

It means the Broch now possess both Aberdeenshire trophies, having won the Aberdeenshire Cup against Formartine United 2-1 in the autumn, and provides momentum for their pursuit of Brora Rangers in the Highland League title race.

Fraserburgh are nine points behind Brora with two games in hand, with the Cattachs also scheduled to come along the A96 next month.

Locos had been game opponents and perhaps enjoyed the better of the first half’s play. However, the clinical performances from the Broch’s frontline saw them to victory.

Inverurie, in their first final in three years, had two chances inside a minute to break the deadlock.

Greg Mitchell’s diagonal ball found Jonny Smith in space on the right, with his centre picking out Andy Hunter six yards from goal.

He connected with a close-range header that Paul Leask did well to block.

Smith was involved again 30 seconds later, collecting Sam Burnett’s cut-back but failing to get a clean connection on the ball as his effort rolled wide.

A mix-up between Jamie Beagrie and Leask nearly presented Locos with the opener five minutes later before the goalkeeper was able to recover his ground and clear.

Andy Low’s side had been the most enterprising in the first 15 minutes but the Broch, looking to follow up their success in the Aberdeenshire Cup, teased an opener through Lewis Davidson’s cross that Andy Reid needed to get fingertips to, before Thomas Reid completed the clearance.

Burnett, on loan from League 2 side Cove Rangers, was next to try his luck, latching on to a soft header from Willie West but skying his effort at goal.

Fraserburgh’s Paul Campbell.

They were made to pay in the 22nd minute, with a long clearance from Leask collected by Campbell and from the edge of the box, he beat Reid with a shot into the far corner.

Campbell came close to adding a second seven minutes before the break after Paul Young had broken clear and squared to him, but the striker was unable to direct his shot on goal.

Locos dragged themselves level just before the interval, with Angus set clear by Burnett and the former Buckie Thistle man lifted the ball over Leask with a sublime chip.

The equaliser was merited for Inverurie, who had been threatening in large swathes of the first half, but they were to find themselves behind again nine minutes into the second half.

Campbell exchanged passes with Davidson and delivered the ball to the back post, where Barbour flung himself to meet it and crash his finish into the roof of the net.

They were unfortunate not to extend their lead before the hour, with Andy Reid diverting Owen Cairns’ cross away from goal with Ryan Cowie waiting to pounce.

But the third goal was soon to come on 66 minutes, with Ross Willox turning the ball across the box with Andy Reid stranded, allowing Campbell to shoot into an empty net.

Campbell was inches away from a hat-trick after more excellent work by Barbour before being replaced, to applause from the Fraserburgh supporters.

Locos were unable to muster any sort of comeback, with Mark Cowie’s men deservedly adding to their trophy haul.
