Lewis Mackinnon insists Buckie Thistle players could not expect to be paid during football’s shutdown.
Staff at the Highland League club have agreed to suspend all wages from the end of March until football returns, in an effort to help the club with running costs.
Chairman Gary Farquhar presented the proposal to manager Graeme Stewart and player-assistant boss Mackinnon, with captain Kevin Fraser then passing it on to the players.
It was met with approval and Mackinnon said the staff have to do their bit to help out.
He said: “It got a positive response from all the guys.
“In unprecedented times you can’t expect the club to keep paying us if there’s no football. It’s a secondary income and most can survive without it.
“We’re backed very heavily by the chairman and you can’t be expecting him to keep ploughing in money when his own income is going to be affected.
“It’s a sensible thing to do and when we put it to Kevin (Fraser) to discuss with the boys, the feedback was: ‘Go for it’.
“Hopefully it helps keep the club healthy when we come out of this.”
The club has cancelled several functions at Victoria Park due to the coronavirus pandemic but has offered to help the local community in any way it can.
Players and staff have remained in contact via WhatsApp and have been set personal programmes by Buckie defender Hamish Munro, a qualified sports scientist.
Mackinnon added: “He’s got fresh ideas and it’s just good to keep ticking over.”
