Strathspey Thistle manager Gordon Nicolson feels it is difficult to draw conclusions over his side’s campaign which ended with 10 matches still remaining. The Jags ended the Highland League season with 19 points from 22 matches, after the campaign was cut short last month due to coronavirus.
The Grantown outfit had set their record tally in the previous campaign, claiming 33 points from 34 matches. Although Nicolson’s hopes of surpassing that were thwarted by the premature end to the campaign, he took encouragement from Strathspey’s showing.
Nicolson said: “Last year we got our highest points total, and we set ourselves a target of surpassing that.
“I think we would have needed quite a good end to the season to get the points total we wanted.
“We started the season off pretty well, before we hit a bit of a sticky patch.
“I think we have been competitive in virtually all our games. There have been a couple of blips against Keith and Forres, but other than that it’s been what we wanted.
“It would have been a better reflection to see where we were after the full 32 games. We still effectively had a third of the season still to play.
“We had games against other teams not too far away from us, so it would have been nice to play those games.”
It remains unclear when next season will start, which means Nicolson is struggling to plan ahead.
Nicolson felt champions Brora Rangers were worthy title winners, and he hopes the Cattachs are not denied the chance to contend for a place in League 2.
He added: “From the teams we have played, and the highlights I have seen, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind Brora were going to go on and win the league.
“I don’t think you’d find anybody that would say differently.”
