Former Aberdeen and Montrose defender Craig Duguid believes making the move to the Highland League with Formartine United can help him make a return to the SPFL.
The 20-year-old Aberdonian has signed a two-year deal with United and believe the move to North Lodge Park is the ideal vehicle to resurrect his career. He said: “I am looking forward to getting a regular game with a club which has real prospects.
“Formartine seem to be looking forward, instead of being happy to stay in the Highland League and they have ambitions of getting into the SPFL via the new play-off system which attracted me into signing for them. Manager Steve Paterson also impressed me. He has a lot of ambition for the club.”
Paterson is equally happy with his new signing. He said: “Craig had two years in full-time football with Aberdeen and he comes with a glowing reference from former Dons under-20 coach Neil Cooper. He is a very attack-minded full back who can play either at left or right back, so he certainly does give us options. Last term I played the likes of Neil McVitie, Hamish Munro and Stephen Jeffrey at right back but all of them are probably better in other positions.
“After he was freed by Aberdeen he joined Montrose but he never got a game. This now gives him an opportunity to come into a good side. I like energetic full backs who can get forward and Craig fits that bill perfectly.”
