Buckie Thistle progressed to the final of the Highland League Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over Brora Rangers.

The two sides had shared a thrilling 2-2 draw after extra-time, with Andy MacAskill netting the winning penalty in a 4-3 spot-kick victory.

Buckie had taken an early lead through Steven Ross, however Bjorn Wagenaar levelled for the home side shortly after the interval.

Although both sides pushed for a winner there was to be no breakthrough before the end of the 90 minutes

Jack Murray looked to have netted the winner for the Jags early in the second half of extra time, however Brora forced the match to spot-kicks courtesy of Gregor MacDonald’s strike in the dying seconds, however it was Graeme Stewart’s men who triumphed in the shoot-out.

Buckie will now face Rothes in the final at Kynoch Park next weekend.

Brora made two changes from the side which drew 2-2 with Cove Rangers in midweek, with Millar Gamble and Jordan MacRae replacing Paul Brindle and Gregor MacDonald.

The Jags were in competitive action for the first time this season, however they could not have wished for a better start, taking the lead after less than two minutes. Joe McCabe played Ross clean through, with the forward coolly slotting past Joe Malin from 12 yards.

Brora looked for a quick response, with Wagenaar seeing a free kick tipped over by Daniel Bell, who also did well to thwart the Dutchman with his legs.

Both sides had chances towards the end of the first half, with Andy Macrae seeing a low effort deflected into the side netting, while at the other end Buckie were denied a second when Sam Urquhart saw a strike palmed away by Joe Malin.

Brora started the second half strongly, and levelled on 57 minutes when Martin Maclean’s outstanding pass released Wagenaar, who squeezed the ball past Bell from an acute angle.

Both sides pushed for a winner, Wagenaar striking off the bar from long-range, while Malin came to Brora’s rescue with a superb save to deny substitute Scott Adams three minutes from time.

Buckie regained the lead three minutes into the second half of extra-time, with Murray rising to nod home Andy MacAskill’s corner.

The Jags were reduced to 10 men when Hamish Munro was sent off for hauling down Brindle as he bore down on goal.

Brora pushed for another equaliser with Jordan MacRae twice coming close, firstly nodding over from Wagenaar’s free kick before seeing another header superbly saved by Bell.

The Cattachs equalised in the dying seconds to Buckie’s agony, with MacDonald seeing his strike deflected past Bell, however Buckie picked themselves up to triumph in the shoot-out.
