MacAskill wants to put boyhood hero in shade

Turriff United midfielder Andy MacAskill is hoping he will be in direct opposition to one of his boyhood heroes when Clyde are the visitors to the Haughs today in the Scottish Cup.

The lifelong Rangers supporter is relishing the chance to go head to head with former Light Blues captain Barry Ferguson, now player-manager of the Bully Wee.

The Aberdeen-based policeman said: “When I was growing up I was a Rangers supporter and Barry was my hero. If I was to line up against him in the middle of the park it would be pretty amazing.

“However, I certainly wouldn’t be star-struck in any way. I would be looking to get the better of him to help my team-mates put them out of the cup.

“I have been playing in a central midfield role in the last few weeks and I have been enjoying it. Things have been going pretty well for us so far this season.

“Our pre-season build-up included a weekend up in the Highlands, that was great for team-building.

“Our manager Ross Jack is really professional and that runs through everything we do, so we always know what we are supposed to be doing.

“We have done our homework on Clyde and we do have home advantage. As a League 2 side they will start the game as favourites but we always have a chance at Turriff, we are on a decent run but we’re certainly not getting too carried away.

“Clyde play at a higher level than ourselves and they have players who have played at an even higher level. We know they are a good side but we also know that if we are at our best there is a chance we can take something out of the game.”

The 22-year-old former Keith midfielder believes a passionate home crowd could prove to be United’s secret weapon.

He said: “Our supporters have been brilliant so far this season. As it is Barry Ferguson’s team, and he could be playing, I would imagine that quite a few Rangers supporters might also come along, so there should be a big crowd creating a great atmosphere.”
