Saturday’s 2-2 draw away to Fraserburgh was enough to see Academy hit a significant milestone for the season as they reached the 50 point mark.
Of course the main reason that we’ve been able to reach 50 points by mid-December is the fact that we have already played an incredible 23 league games so far this season.
With the controversial new pyramid system leaving no wiggle room at the end of the season, midweek fixtures have become a lot more regular for the Scorries so far this season.
There is also the fact, though, that we will now reach at least the 20th of December without any postponements at all which must be a record, with Saturday’s home tie against Cove also looking a good bet to go ahead.
The only downside is that it will leave our calendar for 2015 looking rather sparse as after the 3rd of January we will have four months to play our remaining eight fixtures!
Having only won 53 points during the entirety of the last campaign, the fact that we are only three points adrift of that total with 11 games left to play is another indicator of the vast improvements shown by the team recently.
In fact, only six more points are needed to set our second highest tally ever in the Highland League.
Bettering our record of 76 points from two seasons ago would be asking a lot, given there are only 33 left to play for, however I’d say a realistic target at this moment would be to attempt to reach at least 70.
If we can achieve that then it would surely be enough to secure a spot in the top four or five at the very least and if we were to do it with a couple games to spare, give the players the chance to chase down that record they so brilliantly set in 2013.
