Huntly manager Gregg Carrol was relieved his side overturned a two-goal deficit against Rothes on Saturday before going on to record their biggest win of the season, a 5-2 Christie Park triumph.
The victory moved the Black and Golds up to 14th place in the table, leapfrogging both Keith and Lossiemouth in the process, and the former Deveronvale and Buckie Thistle manager said: “The most important thing was to get a confidence-boosting win against one of the teams round about us in the table.
“We beat Lossie up at Grant Park on November 22, after that we played Clach up in Inverness. We did well that day and really should have taken something from a game, we lost narrowly 3-2, but the next time out we were on the end of a real hammering at Nairn County.
“To come back after not playing for the last three weeks and score five goals was very pleasing, especially as we were 2-0 to Rothes early-on.
“When we were down what I wanted was the players to show a bit of character, and they certainly did.
“We lost both goals from goalkeeping mistakes, but in the end we scored five goals at home, and we certainly haven’t done that in my time at the club.”
Carrol was particularly pleased by Huntly’s second-half showing, when he added: “It was a really good performance and we scored four times from corners. If the delivery is rubbish we’re not going to threaten anyone but on Saturday Neale Davidson’s delivery was top-class as he put the ball right into the danger area and thankfully we managed to score four times from those set-pieces.
“We are now closing in on Fort William who have been on an absolutely brilliant run and hopefully we can keep things going when we play another team down near the bottom of the table, Strathspey Thistle, in Grantown on Saturday.”
