Foxy the dog will be reunited with her owners after being rescued from the oncoming traffic on the A96 by Turriff United FC.
The football club was heading home from their Breedon Highland League match at Nairn County on Saturday when the drama started as a terrified pup could be seen dashing across the road.
United boss Dean Donaldson and first-team coach Graeme Taylor took it upon themselves to rescue the frightened puppy, putting their own lives at risk in the process.
Donaldson said: “The dog had me dodging cars on the A96.
“We were heading back from Nairn on the main road and there was a car slowing down in front of us and we wondered what was going on.
“It was only we saw this poor dog dodging traffic on the road that we realised what was happening.
“We gasped a few times as it looked as if the dog was going to be run over.
“Graeme and I jumped off the bus and about 10 minutes later we managed to get her.
“She had dug herself in under a car coming the other way and we managed to drag her out from underneath the car on the main road.
“I was dodging cars myself but we had to do something or the poor soul would have died otherwise.”
Social media appeal successful in tracing owners
United shared pictures of the dog on their social media channels last night and having spent the night with the Turriff boss and his family Foxy will be reunited with her owners today.

Donaldson said: “The owners, who are from Elgin, called this morning and we’re meeting them in Banff today as my boy has a game there.
“She slept at the bottom of my boy’s bed all night quite the thing.
“We’d been calling her Nala but we’ve found out she’s called Foxy. Her owners had been out looking for the dog all night and I know they are just delighted to be getting her back.
“Anyone would have done what we did in that situation and I’m glad it has all worked out in the end.”
Owner’s relief at being reunited with Foxy
Martha Stewart, owner of Pomerianian cross pug Foxy, was delighted to be reunited with her pet at lunchtime.
Stewart, who is based in Coxton near Lhanbryde, said: “It was a huge relief to get her back today and we’re glad to have her home.
“We have no idea how she managed to get out of the house but we think she must have gotten a fright from the fireworks.
“How she managed to end away down the A96 is another mystery.
“We were out looking for her last night and I went onto Facebook this morning to post that she was missing when I saw that Turriff had posted about her.
“She can’t half get around. After hearing from the Turriff manager about her running around on the road we know how lucky we are to have her home unscathed.
“It was the manager who took her home last night and we’re so grateful for what they’ve done.
“I want to thank the football team for looking after her.”
