Lenny Wilson says the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup is just as important as the Breedon Highland League for Brechin City.
The Hedgemen face Rothes at Glebe Park in round one this afternoon.
Although winning the league and trying to gain promotion is Brechin’s main objective this season Wilson says they’re determined to try to get their hands on the League Cup as well.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper said: “Realistically we’re not going to win the Scottish Cup or the Challenge Cup but this is a competition where there’s a chance for us to win some silverware.
“So the mindset is the same as a league game for us and we’re treating it as a must-win.
“It’s been a few years since Brechin has won anything so that’s an incentive for us to try to win some silverware.
“You go into every game looking to win it, whether it’s a league game or a cup game.
“We play to win, that’s what we’re all here to do and hopefully we can do that against Rothes.”
Rothes won the League Cup for the first time in 2020.
Manager Ross Jack added: “We’re in the competition to win it, we had great success a couple of years ago and we’d love to emulate that if possible.
“But Brechin are firing on all cyclinders and I don’t imagine they’re frightened about Rothes coming to Glebe Park.
“However, it’s up to us to cause an upset. We’ve improved over the last few weeks and hopefully we can continue that improvement.
“We’re doing the right things, we’re keeping the ball better, we’re more secure defensively and we’re creating more chances.”
