I never used to believe in bogey men, ghosts or anything to do with fates or the spirit world –far too much of a rationalist for that sort of thing – or so I thought.
However when it comes to Formartine and Forres I must confess to some creeping doubts on the matter – I think we’re just jinxed by them. I can only remember us once beating them – in the Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup a few days after they had, almost as usual, turned us over in the league– (factually we have apparently won twice in 12 attempts but I can’t remember the other one).
In the days when they carried all before them on the way to the title it made sense that they could simply be a better team and expect to beat us. But these days are past and we still can’t beat them – even when we comfortably occupy a higher league position than they do, Can Cans can and do continue to beat us.
Jinxed I tell you!
On Saturday I thought we outplayed them in the first half, shaded it in the second only to see two points evaporate in the wake of a primary school error in the last five minutes. We were never going to get a win – fate would see to that.
In Gulliver’s Travels, Brobdingnag is the land of the giants and when we get to Forres, and I look at the hale tribe of Frasers and Kyle Scott, I know exactly how Gulliver felt when he landed there. Maybe it’s just a size thing but it feels like we enter a strange supernatural world where Jack and the Beanstalk doesn’t work. Not for Formartine anyway! What did we do in a former life?
