I’m beginning to run out of superlatives to describe Academy’s away form this season.
Gordon Connelly’s men had already surpassed the club’s previous record for most away wins in a season even before Saturday’s victory down in Buckie which took us to 10 victories from 13 matches on our travels this year.
Surprisingly, it has been our home from which has let us down at times in this campaign, leading to costly defeats to Nairn, Turriff and Formartine.
On Wednesday night, though, there must be no repeat of those results when we take on the defending champions and league leaders Brora in what is surely the biggest game of the season so far.
Realistically, our chances of winning the title are minuscule as two derby wins would still leave us at least five points off the top.
And even with Brora still facing difficult trips to Formartine and the only other title challenger still in the frame, Turriff, it would surely be too big an ask for Academy to overhaul both of those teams.
When it comes to beating those Dungeon dwellers, however, the only motivation we need is just that – beating them.
It’s been over two years since our last victory in a North derby; a glorious 3-0 triumph at Harmsworth Park with the home crowd revelling in the misery of Kirkwood and his players a mere few months after he had controversially jumped ship.
While trophies and glory hunting supporters have inevitably followed for Ben Mackay’s big spenders, it can hardly be considered that great of an achievement given their resources compared to many other clubs in the league.
Whatever our starting line-up is on Wednesday, you can guarantee that we will have 11 men stepping on to the pitch 100% committed to winning the three points and sending Brora back down the A9 with tails between their legs.
Another 3-0 may be too much to ask for but I’m sure every Scorries’ fan would take a win of any kind to end the two years of red and white dominance in this fixture.
