Cove Rangers attacker Jamie Watt has suffered disappointment in previous Highland League Cup finals but he is determined to help Cove overcome the challenge of Turriff United this weekend.
However, before Saturday’s game comes around the Aberdonians also hope to be in another final as their cup double header with United starts tonight with the semi-final of the Aberdeenshire Shield taking centre stage. Both games are at the Haughs.
Watt returned to Highland League action at the start of this season after a spell in Australia where he latterly played for Sydney University and has been in fine scoring form with Cove.
The 37-year-old plumber says the games against United will be a big factor in defining how their season will finish.
Watt said: “We have been sharing the goals around the team with Daryl Nicol being our leading scorer but Jonny Smith and myself have also been finding the target and this, combined with goals from other areas of the team, has seen us have a good season.
“The six goals against Vale on Saturday were pleasing as we try to get as high a finish in the league as we can, while I was also delighted to score on my return to Princess Royal Park where I had good times while their as a Vale player.
“The League Cup was our Achilles heel at Vale where I lost three finals playing for the club, so I would dearly love to help Cove reach this season’s final to give me a chance of gaining the only medal I haven’t got from the major Highland League competitions.
“We know that the games against Turriff are going to be hard as we have lost to them twice already this season but our confidence is high as we have only had one defeat in the last 20 games or so but double-headers never follow the same pattern, so it will be interesting but we are ready to face the tough challenge.
“Wednesday is a big game but to me Saturday is even bigger. We want to win both.
“It would be great if I could help Cove to a cup double which would complete a good season for us. It won’t be easy, though, as Turriff are flying high at present”.
