As the season started, most predictions were that it was going to be a one horse race and the winning jockey would be from the Brora stable.
Half a dozen games in and these predictions don’t look quite so clever. There’s only one team left that has yet to drop a point, Cove, and hard on their heels are Turra, ourselves and Brora in that order.
I don’t for a minute think that the season will end up that way and I’m not even suggesting that Brora won’t win it although I didn’t think pre- season that they would and I’m even less convinced now.
What I’m suggesting is that the Highland League has far too much strength in depth to be dominated that easily by one team for more than a season or two.
Forres, Buckie and Cove have all been recent winners and of them, Cove for all that they presently pursue the peripatetic wanderings of a nomad tribe look ominously like they will be in at the death at the end of the season.
I remember Huntly’s five in a row and their utter dominance back in the day but that was a whole generation ago – the world has moved on. I know Brora want to replicate or exceed that. Can’t see it.
Can we win it? – Too damn right we can! That’s the aim of every fibre of every person at North Lodge and we are essentially a new side – I’ve watched us not only score 25 goals in the last three games but, more important show improvement game on game as we have done so.
Of the teams currently in contention we are the one that has done the most radical rebuild and I’d argue still has the greatest scope for development and improvement.
Put like that, you’d be daft to bet against us.
