Six weeks after leaving Rothes, Rab Mulheron is back in Highland League football – as part of Kris Hunter’s back-room staff at Formartine United.
The 62-year-old man of many clubs has rocketed from the foot of the Highland League table right to the top after Formartine reached the summit with a 2-0 win at Brora Rangers last weekend.
Before joining the North Lodge Park outfit Mulheron held management positions at eight Highland League clubs – Clach, Nairn County, Lossiemouth, Fort William, Strathspey Thistle, Wick Academy, Brora Rangers and latterly Rothes. At Rothes, he was vice-chairman and director of football.
Mulheron also had a spell in the junior ranks with Dufftown.
After the recent Rothes boardroom reshuffle, Mulheron is delighted to be back in football.
He said: “I took a month out after leaving Rothes.
“There were a couple of clubs interested in using my services but at my age I really don’t want to go back into the management hotseat. But I still wanted to be involved in some way with a game which really is in my blood.
“I had a chat with Formartine United secretary, Martin Johnston. He in turn had a word with United manager Kris Hunter and he invited me through to the Buckie game last week where we had a chat both before and after the game. I going to do the same role for him as I did for Davie Kirkwood at Brora Rangers.
“Basically, I will be a first-team analyst and technical adviser to Kris. I was at the Nairn County against Brora Rangers match last Wednesday night and reported back to Kris, who used the dossier ahead of Saturday’s game at Brora. Next Saturday I will be going to the Borders to watch Formartine’s Scottish Cup opponents Gretna.”
Mulheron added: “I will be doing other bits and pieces for the club and I am delighted to be back in football. This is a job which suits me down to the ground. It is a fresh challenge. I have tried to give the game up but I just can’t.
“Everyone at Formartine has made me feel very welcome. I have known Kris and his assistant Mike Cormack for a long time and the same goes for Martin Johnston. It is really nice to get up on a Saturday morning again and head off to a football match.”
