There was a most unusual occurrence in Wick on Saturday as Academy actually drew a league game.
As if that wasn’t rare enough already, the game finished goalless; the first time there have been no goals in a league match at the Harmsworth since January 2010.
Despite the lack of goals it was still an entertaining match-up and a draw seemed a fair result, with Fraserburgh playing very well and controlling a good portion of the 90 minutes, although we had a couple great chances to snatch victory after they had been reduced to 10 men.
Credit also to Sean McCarthy for a terrific penalty save early on in the match. He is really starting to prove himself as a top class goalkeeper this season as well as being a key component of our ‘build from the back’ philosophy.
Next on the horizon is a derby match against Brora at the Dungeon on Wednesday night.
It’s not often a derby match is only the third biggest match of the month, but that is the case this time around as the Brora match seems to pale in comparison to our big cup games at the end of the month.
Still, though, a derby can never be taken lightly and the team will take confidence from the result we got down there at the beginning of the season when, incase anyone has forgotten, we BEAT them in the North of Scotland Cup.
Meanwhile, Gordon Connelly has quite rightly taken aim at the Highland League management for the absurd scheduling of our match against Formartine United which will be played on the 18th of this month, a Wednesday night.
It is absolutely ridiculous to force Formartine to travel that distance midweek, and similarly so making us play three days before a cup final when our opponents Nairn have a free week.
Connelly confirmed on Saturday that he will not be putting a full team out for that match and will rest as many first team players as he can, which still isn’t an easy task given the size of our squad.
Three league points are well worth sacrificing for a shot at silverware and, to be honest, even if we lost every remaining league match of the campaign, if we win the cup final then it would still be considered a fantastic season.
