The challenge for Buckie Thistle is formidable, but Thistle midfielder Andy Low is confident his team can be the one to derail Cove Rangers’ winning start to the season.
The Aberdeen team has won all its 15 league matches this season to move to the top of the league and showed its attacking abilities in the 6-0 win against bottom-placed Rothes at Harlaw Park, Inverurie on Wednesday night.
Next up is a trip to Victoria Park this afternoon and Low said: “A home match against Cove is exactly the type of game we need after our disappointing 2-2 draw at Rothes last weekend.
“We will naturally lift our game to play a team who are setting the benchmark this season.
“It is the perfect game for us as there is no pressure and we feel we have players in our squad who can compete with any team in the Highland League.”
The 31-year-old former Huntly and Inverurie Locos player made his first start of the season on Saturday after recovering from injury and is enjoying his role in midfield after playing most of his career in attack.
Low added: “I have lost a little bit of pace since I last played up front, but I always thought central midfield was my best position. I like to be involved in the game.
“I damaged my cruciate ligament against Peterhead in pre-season, I thought I was going to be out for a long time, perhaps the whole season, but as it was just a small tear I was able to repair it just through rehabilitation. Saturday was my first start and so far so good.”
Cove Rangers’ assistant-manager Graeme Mathieson knows what to expect today and said: “Every team will be desperate to be the first ones to beat us this season so they are all going flat out to end our 100% record and knock us off our perch.
“Every team seems to be treating a game against Cove as their cup final, that makes it our cup final as well.
“We played really well in beating Rothes 6-0 in midweek, we used the ball well and scored some quality goals, although we also missed two or three chances which was disappointing.
“We were also able to rest central defenders Eric Watson and Alan Redford, we have a pretty tight squad and with a busy time coming up so we need to rotate the squad as much as we can.”
