“OK.”, you may say “but Formartine were always going to beat Rothes anyway. No big deal that”.
If you did, you’d be missing the point entirely: it wasn’t the fact that we did what everyone and their dog thought we would do; it was all about how we did it.
I’ve be grumbling on for weeks now about the effects that the accumulation of injuries has had on us – especially to defence but that has had a real knock on up top too. It took until Saturday for that to become properly clear.
For the first time in over a month we have had the services of big Garry Wood up front – playing with a target man again – what a boost.
You could see how much he relished it – it took him less than two minutes to score his first goal of the game and his rampaging influence was there for all to see for the full 90 minutes.
If he seemed to like it, Gauldy just loved it – four goals in a shade over half an hour. He was like an electric futtret – popping up all over the place and popping them in from all angles, at his absolute best.
You can begin to see just what this squad is capable of and now that we have influential players like “Biscuits” McVitie, “Squish” Munro and “ Baggy” Bagshaw on their way back, already on the bench and pushing for first team starts; it’s looking that there’s now not just light at the end of the tunnel but that it‘s nearer and brighter than many of us thought.
Of course we have struggled against Cove and nobody claims that we are the fully finished article yet but we’re getting a hen’s stride nearer to it every week.
Happy Christmas!
