If Formartine United beat fellow title-challengers Cove Rangers tonight, and go on to take full points from their final three matches, the Pitmedden club will create history by winning the Highland League championship for the first time.
Although reigning champions Brora Rangers still top the table on 79pts, and could yet make it three titles in a row, it is unlikely after that unexpected 2-2 draw against 10-man Wick Academy last weekend, and with only two games to go the maximum points they could achieve is 85.
However, Cove could potentially achieve 91pts from their remaining four games, that would certainly ne enough to win the league, but if Formartine were to win tonight, and both teams took full points from their remaining three games, the sides would be tied on 88pts, with a far superior goal-difference, currently +26, Formartine would claim the title.
Cove have already defeated Formartine on no fewer than four occasions this season, could the Indian sign continue at Harlaw Park in Inverurie tonight, or will the law of averages hand Formartine the win they seek – tonight will tell!
Nothing will be decided tonight, and the race for the title may well go to the final game of the season a week on Saturday, when Cove Rangers travel to Turriff United and Formartine United head North to face Strathspey Thistle in Grantown.
