Locos made the short trip to play Turriff United on Saturday in their last away fixture of the season.
Spring has certainly not yet sprung in Turra and the cold and dreich weather was matched by a forgettable first-half in which goalmouth action was almost non-existent.
The game had a real end-of-season feel and that was reflected in a poor attendance. The most exciting action was the walk to the pie stand at the interval!
In fairness to both teams the pitch was heavy and the game did improve in the second-half. Kevin Main is arguably the best goalkeeper in the Highland League and his colleagues had him to thank for keeping the scoreline blank on 64 minutes as he brilliantly parried a first-time Charlesworth shot round the post.
He was beaten four minutes later, however, as Andy Hunter netted at the back post from a Bavidge cross for the only goal of the game. As Locos pushed on Main surpassed his earlier save when he managed to smother a strong Bavidge shot from 10 yards near the end. That was another class save.
Turriff were by no means out of it, but they huffed and puffed in front of goal and squandered two or three chances from free-kicks just outside the box. In the end Locos held on to their slender advantage fairly comfortably.
It was good to see Bavidge in the mood, but for me the most encouraging aspect was the displays of Colin Charlesworth and Jordan Leyden on the flanks.
They have both missed large parts of the season, but I think that if they can steer clear of injury they will pose awkward questions of opposing defences next year. They both have skill and pace. Connor Rennie looks to be a strong and useful addition in midfield.
And so it’s on to the final game of the season at home to Clachnacuddin next Saturday. And then it will be back to cutting the grass and digging the garden.
