Cove Rangers forward Jamie Watt has won his fourth Highland League title and is already thinking about life in League 2 next season.

The 38-year-old fancies a crack at the SPFL if he and his team-mates can overcome Edinburgh City and then East Stirling to earn a place in the SPFL.

Watt said: “At this stage of my career I would never have dreamed I might have the chance to step from the Highland League in with the clubs in the Scottish League.

“Time will tell whether I am still with Cove next season, there is an offer on the table at the moment, I will just have to wait and see what happens. If I do stay, and we gain promotion, it would be a tremendous achievement to make my debut in League 2.

“We will be doing our very best to beat Edinburgh City over two legs in the next fortnight and if we do that we will face East Stirling home and away with a place in the SPFL up for grabs.”

Watt was delighted to pick up his fourth Highland League championship winning medal at the Haughs on Saturday.

The Aberdeen plumber said: “That’s my fourth league medal in the bag, three with Cove after winning the first one when I was at Deveronvale. That was more than a decade ago and was very special, but winning this one has probably been the hardest.

“Formartine United and Brora Rangers pushed us all the way to the second last game of the season, it is a massive achievement, especially as we have had such a small squad.”

Watt’s team-mate, the Highland League’s leading-scorer Daryl Nicol is determined to finish his Cove career by taking the club into the SPFL.

After scoring 42 goals this season, Nicol and his girlfriend will emigrate to Australia in June.

The electrician will be doing everything he can to make sure he signs off in style and said: “I was given a day off for the draw at Turriff as I was carrying a wee bit of an injury, but I should be back 100% fit for Saturday.

“It would be great to add to my goal tally and help the club get into the SPFL. It would be a great way to end my Cove career.”
