Caley Thistle must do better, says captain Gary Warren

Captain Gary Warren insists Caley Thistle must do better defensively after the Highlanders suffered their third straight loss of the season at Dundee on Saturday.

Inverness dominated the game but were left to rue a lack of cutting edge and two poor moments of defending as they lost 2-1 at Dens Park.

Warren knows his side must improve in both departments and, as a defender, will focus on his area of the team for the cause.

He said: “We’re used to leaving ourselves open as that is the way we have played for the last couple of years but it is down to us as defenders to do better or else we will find ourselves out of the game.

“Teams are not cutting us open but it seems as if we can be our own worst enemies and masters of our own downfall. As players and as defenders we need to be a lot better.

“We’ve got a lot of games coming up but we’re looking no further than next week and if we show the same energy and tighten up at the back we won’t be far away.

“I’m a defender and I’m looking to keep it tight at the back and keep clean sheets. If we do that we won’t be far wrong.”

Caley Jags manager Richie Foran hailed Caley Thistle’s display as their best performance of the campaign and Warren was disappointed not to take something from the game.

He said: “Normally in games the opposition can have 10 to 15 minutes of pressure but that didn’t happen. We dominated from start to finish and have come away with nothing. It’s frustrating as we’ve worked hard at keeping the ball and created so many chances but we were not rewarded in the end.”

Left back Carl Tremarco was one positive from Saturday after he scored his fifth goal of the season. The defender has verbally agreed a new deal and Warren is eager to see the club secure his team-mate on a long-term contract.

He said: “Carl is flying and in very good form. That’s his fifth of the season and, from a left back point of view, that’s pretty impressive from him. He is one of our main attacking threats.

“It would be good to get him tied up. He has taken over from Graeme Shinnie and kicked on another gear this year. He has been given a run of games and that’s been a big part of his impressive run of form. “
