On May 30, 2015, Inverness lifted the Scottish Cup for the first time in their history.
Now, nearly two-years-later, the Caley Jags have tasted the ignominy of relegation from Scotland’s top flight.
The question is, what has went wrong for the Highland side since that historic day?
Here are some of they key moments from this season which has finished with Richie Foran’s side being demoted from the Scottish Premiership.
1.) May 2015 – Richie Foran is appointed manager:
In June, veteran midfielder Foran was officially unveiled as the club’s new boss after more than 200 appearances and 45 goals in eight years at the club.
He took over after predecessor John Hughes left the Highlanders following a dispute with chairman Kenny Cameron.
2.) August 2016 – The Highlanders demolish Dunfermline:
The club’s season started off with a bang as they demolished Dunfermline 1-5 to qualify for the last 16 of the Betfred Cup, featuring a hat-trick from midfielder Iain Virgus.
3.) August 2016 – Derby defeat:
Caley lose their first two league games, including a 3-2 defeat to Ross County in the Highland Derby. It compounded a miserable week for Foran’s side, who also crashed out of the Betfred Cup after a shock 1-0 defeat to League 1 underdogs Alloa Athletic.
4.) August 29 2016 – First league win:
The Highlanders leave it late to secure Forans’ first league victory, with Josh Meekings poking home to give the side a 2-1 win over St Johnstone.
5.) September 2016 – Against all odds:
Despite a visit from Brendan Rogers’ unbeaten Celtic side, the Caley Jags still came away with a point thanks to Alex Fisher’s goal, which made it 2-2.
6.) December 2016 – More derby misery:
A 2-3 loss to the Staggies leaves Inverness adrift at the bottom after a dismal record of just one win in 14 matches.
This defeat brings to an end their dominant record at Victoria Park, where they had racked up five straight wins since County’s won 1-0 in May 2013.
7.) January 2017 – Relegation dogfight:
Inverness slumped to a 0-3 defeat to relegation rivals Hamilton, Foran admits after the game that his side are now in a struggle to avoid the drop.
8.) March 2017 – Hopes of survival:
A late goal by County’s Alex Schalk ensures the spoils are split but the point gives the Caley Jags cause for optimism, but it won’t last.
9.) April 2017 – Demolition derby:
Former assistant manager Maurice Malpas returned to the club, joining Forans’ coaching staff, in an effort to help the club avoid the drop.
However soon after he comes on board, Inverness are on the receiving end of a 4-0 drubbing at Victoria Park.
10.) Relegation – Too little, too late:
A spirited performance sees the doomed side run out 3-2 winners over Motherwell on the final day of the season.
However, it’s too little, too late as Hamilton also secure a win meaning Inverness are relegated from the top flight.
