Caley Thistle have narrowed their search for a new manager to three candidates following the sacking of Richie Foran on Monday night.

The Highland club’s directors are keen to speak to Aberdeen under-20s coach Paul Sheerin, while former Caley Jags assistant manager Maurice Malpas and Queen’s Park manager Gus MacPherson are also in contention.

Foran was dismissed by new Caley Jags chair-man Willie Finlayson on Monday after he was understood to have rejected a wage cut following the club’s relegation to the Champion-ship.

Finlayson’s attention has now turned to quickly appointing Foran’s successor, in an attempt to head the club’s efforts to return to the Premiership at the first time of asking.

Malpas knows the score having been brought in by Foran in April after previous chairman Kenny Cameron recommended he hired an experienced coach to help him.

Sheerin, who played for Inverness between 1998 and 2001, has caught the eye in his role with the Dons, who he steered to the Development League title in 2015, while he also won the Third Division with Arbroath four seasons earlier.

MacPherson has also emerged as a contender, having helped Queen’s Park consolidate in League 1 after guiding them to promotion in 2016.

Former St Mirren manager MacPherson also knows what it takes to secure promotion to the top flight, having guided the Buddies to the First Division title in 2006.
