Was this the best Highland derby ever? Take a look back to the last time Ross County and Caley Thistle were paired together in the Scottish Cup

With the draw for the last 16 pairing Highland rivals Ross County and Caley Thistle together, would it be too much to ask for their next encounter to be as spicy as the last time they met in the Scottish Cup?

With both sides in the top flight, they met in the fourth round on December 1, 2012 and produced an absolute cracker.

The match was broadcast live on BBC Scotland with a lunchtime kick-off and lived up to its billing.

There was just a solitary goal during the first half in Dingwall – a beautiful volleyed finish from now-County striker Billy Mckay – but the match really came into life after the interval.

The below grainy Russian-subtitled footage is the only evidence of the tie left on Youtube but take a look above for a picture gallery from the match.

Rocco Quinn levelled the match with a curling strike out of the reach of Inverness keeper Antonio Reguero and the match ebbed back and forth until the final frantic 16 minutes.

A long-range Mckay strike deflected fortuitously past County keeper Mark Brown off the face of Caley Thistle skipper Richie Foran, leaving the Staggies to bemoan their bad luck.

These things have a habit of evening themselves out though and on 86 minutes another long-range effort, this time from County’s Iain Vigurs, took a huge deflection off of ICT’s David Raven and looped over Reguero’s head to make it 2-2.

With time running out, a 93rd minute Richard Brittain free kick looked to have won it for County, with manager Derek Adams jumping for joy on the touchline as the Staggies skipper’s free kick found its way through a mess of bodies and deceived Reguero.

But incredibly, Inverness marched up the other end, forced a corner and Foran bundled in an equaliser.

Keep an eye for ICT gaffer Terry Butcher’s less-than-friendly reaction to the late goal.

The teams that day

Ross County: Brown, Tokely, Boyd, Fitzpatrick, Kovacevic, Brittain, Quinn, Vigurs, Kettlewell (Fotheringham, 81), Morrow (Ross, 79), Glen.

Subs not used: Cooper, Munro, Fraser.

Caley Thistle: Reguero, Meekings, Raven, Warren, G Shinnie, Tudur Jones, A Shinnie, Draper, Foran, Doran, Mckay (Roberts 89)

Subs not used: Esson, Pepper, Sutherland, Cooper.

A Billy Mckay double for Caley Thistle either side of an Iain Vigurs strike in the replay in Inverness 10 days later saw the home side progress.

Recreating such a classic encounter might be a tall order, so we would even settle for as spicy an encounter as the club’s last meeting in Dingwall.

It ended 2-1 to County, with both sides finishing with 10 men after a late melee resulted in red cards for Brian Graham and Shaun Rooney. How about it lads?
