Dundee v Caley Thistle: Latapy wants points not praise

Caley Thistle may finally be getting the praise they deserve for an excellent start to the season but assistant manager Russell Latapy is quite content for his side to remain under the radar.

Hamilton Accies and Dundee have received plenty of plaudits for the way they have coped in the Scottish Premiership since moving up from the Championship.

But it is Inverness who are only three points adrift of leaders Celtic thanks largely to an unbeaten home run.

Caley Jags, who travel to Dundee today, ran out 4-0 winners in Tuesday’s Scottish Cup replay against St Mirren and Latapy is pleased others are starting to take notice of his team’s fine form.

But he said: “That’s not our objective. Our objective is to teach the boys how we want to play football. Hopefully, they take it on board, create opportunities, be attractive and get results.

“If people want to talk about us in a positive way it is appreciated. If not, we take it on the chin. My job is to teach the boys how to play football the best I can. They’re playing really well and winning football games, so long may that continue.

“I don’t want to go over the top but I think we have had more of the ball than the opposition in 60 or 70% of the games we have played. That is something we’re happy about and it’s one step in the process. Another is creating goalscoring opportunities and another step is taking them. Once we put everything together we’ll be happy with the end result.”

Despite their impressive form, Latapy says his team still has plenty to learn if they are to challenge for European qualification come the end of the season.

Latapy added: “There is always work to do. Football and life are funny – even if you think you have something covered, something comes up and you need to go back and work on the whole process again.

“Just now we’re fairly happy with what is happening.

“We will keep working on the whole process and hopefully we’ll win one of those really important games that makes everyone at the club happy and proud.

“The Scottish Premiership is a difficult league and, on any day, anyone can beat anyone.

“The good thing for us is we’re playing against a Dundee team that likes to get the ball down and play, like we do, so it should be an interesting match.”
