Caley Thistle manager John Hughes believes the suspension of defender David Raven and midfielder Greg Tansey gives him the chance to experiment against St Johnstone tonight.
Tansey misses out due to an accumulation of yellow cards, while Raven was sent off in the 2-1 victory against Kilmarnock on Saturday, January 10, which was Inverness’ last match following the postponement of their game against Dundee United at the weekend.
Hughes’ solution during the match was to move vice-captain Graeme Shinnie to right back from midfield but, aside from the enforced change in personnel, the Caley Jags manager could alter his system for the visit of the Perth side.
Hughes said: “It gives us a choice to make. It gives us a chance to change the whole shape and try something different we’ve been working on.
“One thing we want to do is change the team at half-time, even if we’re winning. I want to come out in the second half with a whole different shape.
“If you’re winning at half-time, the opposition coach will adjust his system to try to stop us playing. You have to come out in the second half with a whole different shape and make sure it works.
“Your players have to be adaptable. It’s hard enough for players to play one position and sometimes they throw their toys out of the pram if you ask them to do a different job, maybe more of a defensive one.
“However, against Kilmarnock the adjustment was simple – put Shinnie in at right back and go with a three-man midfield.
“The way we controlled the football you would have thought we still had 11 men. I’m delighted because everyone goes on about the result but the performance was just as important to me.”
