Caley Thistle Women manager Karen Mason has issued an apology after her side were withdrawn from the league cup after fielding an ineligible player.
The player in question featured in the Caley Jags’ 2-0 Championship and League One Cup quarter-final win over Dryburgh Athletic, but was ineligible due to being cup-tied.
She was cup-tied having played in a different senior cup competition this season for another team before joining Caley Thistle.
Scottish Women’s Football have fined Inverness £100 and awarded the quarter-final tie as a 3-0 win to Dryburgh, meaning the Dundee side will now progress to the semi-final.
The Inverness manager said it was a “genuine mistake” that she only realised had occurred after the cup game had been played.
In a statement, Mason said: “I can only apologise to the players, coaches and supporters with the outcome of today’s decision.
“It was a genuine mistake and not one I was aware of until it was brought to our attention after the game.
“I am heartfelt sorry for taking this opportunity away from us all.”
