Cammy Harper reckons Caley Thistle will be firmly in the Championship title race if they can defeat Dundee on Saturday.

The versatile player, who has returned to left-back duties from midfield over the past fortnight, is determined to help Inverness slice Dundee’s advantage from five to two points and keep leaders Ayr United within sight.

The 21-year-old, who is now just two matches shy of reaching 100 ICT games, says there’s no reason why they cannot follow last week’s 3-2 Scottish Cup win over Stirling Albion with their first league victory since winning 1-0 at Cove Rangers on October 15.

He said: “Teams and fans in this league get really high after a few wins, but when you lose a couple, you get really low and start thinking the season is over.

“We’re just six points off the top and there is still a long way to go. We’re still right amongst it.

“With the injuries we’ve had, I’d say we’re doing well.”

Keep Dundee within striking range

Harper bagged a brace in September’s 3-2 win at Dundee and he’s eager to keep the in-form Dark Blues within range at the end of the weekend.

He said: “I’d put ourselves within that promotion pack. Dundee are higher than us and this is an important game.

“We don’t want them to move further than five points ahead – we need to be within striking distance.

“A win on Saturday would be ideal to close that gap slightly.

“This league is crazy and anyone can beat anyone. We did well against them last time and we’re hoping to do the same.”

Harper happy to play anywhere

Injuries forced a shape reshuffle, with David Carson moving back into midfield and Harper switching to left-back.

Harper sees it as just part of his job and takes it all in his stride.

He added: “It’s a case of whatever the gaffer wants. I will play wherever, as long as I’m playing. I said that at the beginning of the season when I moved into central midfield.

“As long as I’m playing and helping the team to win then I don’t mind what position I play.”

Improvement needed against Dundee

Having beaten the Binos in the cup, Harper hopes the team now improve their level of performance against Dundee.

He said: “The cup was a nice wee break, but our main focus is always the league. We’re looking forward to getting back to it and hopefully we can get a run of wins together to follow on from the win last week against Stirling Albion.

“It wasn’t a great performance, but getting back to winning ways was good. To get a couple of wins in this league can shoot you right up, but if you don’t win too many, you can drop down.”
