Caley Thistle have taken former Torquay United forward Toby Ajala on trial.
The 23-year-old scored five goals in 45 appearances for Torquay last season, and is a free agent after rejecting a contract offer from the National League club.
The London-born player had spells with Welling, Cheltenham Town, AFC Wimbledon and Bristol City.
Hughes has made six summer signings, including Spanish centre forward Dani Lopez, but the former Stevenage Borough player is still to get off the mark and the manager is keen to add another attacker.
Hughes is hopeful Ajala will fit the bill and said: “What we’re looking for is someone who makes defenders take a step back, because they’re strong and quick.
“That sort of player will give us room to play. A lot of what we’re doing is in front of teams and we need to be more cutting and dynamic in the final third.
“Toby’s an out-and-out forward and looked sharp in training.
“He came and watched the Partick Thistle game on Wednesday and hopefully he might be the one. If not one, we need to keep looking.
“We’re exhausting all our contacts and hoping someone might do us a favour.”
