Caley Thistle slumped to a 4-2 defeat at Celtic Park but will take heart from a much improved second half display.

The Hoops were two ahead after only 12 minutes thanks to headers from Mikael Lustig and Leigh Griffiths.

Stuart Armstrong netted a third for Ronny Deila’s side ten minutes after the break with an excellent curling finish into the top corner.

The former Dundee United player netted Celtic’s fourth after 69 minutes before Caley Thistle substitute Ryan Christie pulled one back moments later.

And Dani Lopez, another Inverness substitute, took advantage of some poor defending to net a second for the visitors 12 minutes from time in an action-packed contest.

Iain Vigurs made his first start for Inverness in his second spell at the club as John Hughes made two alterations from the team that was held to a 0-0 draw against Partick Thistle. Ryan Christie was dropped to the bench, while Carl Tremarco replaced Dani Lopez.

Celtic’s new signing Scott Allan, who joined the club on a four year deal from Hibernian, was paraded in front of the home support prior to kick off.

Celtic made five changes following Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Kilmarnock with captain Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven, Mikael Lustig and Dedryck Boyata all returning to the fold.

It was a disastrous start for Inverness as the hosts surged ahead in the eighth minute.

The Caley Thistle rearguard failed to deal with Stefan Johansen’s in-swinging free kick which was headed home at the back post by Swedish defender Lustig.

And the Hoops doubled their lead a mere four minutes when Nir Bitton twisted and turned Lewis Horner inside out before crossing for Leigh Griffiths, whose downward header beat the despairing Owain Fon Williams.

The visitors had a chance to reduce the deficit soon after when Vigurd drove into a promising position but the former Motherwell player fired over from distance when he should have played in Carl Tremarco.

The Caley Jags were fortunate to avoid falling further behind when Johansen was denied by the crossbar and Ross Draper hacked Stuart Armstrong’s effort from the follow up off the line.

There was another let-off seven minutes when Emilio Izaguirre sent Griffiths one-on-one with Fon Williams but the Celtic attacker was unable to convert.

Andrea Mbuyi-Mutombo went close to finding the net on a rare chance at the other end with a powerful effort from the edge of the area that was tipped over the bar by Craig Gordon.

John Hughes made a change within four minutes of the restart with Christie stepping in to replace Liam Polworth.

Celtic’s wait for a third goal did not go on much longer with Griffiths finding Armstrong in the penalty area and the Inverness-born midfielder produced an exquisite finish to extend the lead.

The Celtic midfielder netted his second of the afternoon and his side’s fourth when he pounced on a loose pass from Devine and stormed towards goal before slotting the ball beyond Fon Williams.

However Caley Thistle pulled one back moments later when the Caley Jags pounced on some slack play by Dedryck Boyata and Ryan Christie calmly drilled the ball into the corner of the net.

And Boyata was at fault again when he squandered possession to Dani Lopez, who ruthlessly shot past Craig Gordon.
